Blue Commotion, the band around singer Zoë Schwarz exists since 2012 and in their eighth year they recently released their sixth CD entitled “Chameleon”. The foursome come from the beautiful county of Dorset in South West England. In addition to the aforementioned Zoë Schwarz, the band consists of guitarist Rob Koral, Hammond organist Pete Whittaker and drummer Paul Robinson. A horn section has been added, consisting of Ian Ellis (tenor sax) and Patrick Hayes (trombone).On the CD we find twelve songs (= 1 hidden bonus track, a nice surprise), eleven of which were written by Rob Koral and Zoë Schwarz and one by Koral with Sue Hawker. Musically, the Zoe Schwarz Blue Commotion is not just any blues band. The arrangements written by Rob Koral are very diverse and combine blues and rock with jazz, latin, boogie and funk. In that respect, the album title “Chameleon” is well chosen: colorful, surprising. I pick out a few songs. In the first song, the swinging “Life Goes On”, the interaction between vocals and horns is beautifully processed. It is a song that occasionally reminds of Steely Dan. Main roles for Hammond and guitar are there in “Hello Old Friend”. The song is carried by the organ and Koral's tasteful guitar solo completes it. Zoë Schwarz leads the entire album with her voice and especially in songs like the ballad “I'll Be There For You” and the blues “When The Blues Came A Knocking” she shows her versatility. The surprise comes to the end at the hearty “Come And Lay With Me”, where after a few seconds of silence the band turns into a jazzy version of Nina Simone's “Lover Man”.
"Chameleon" has become a lively and exciting album. So enjoy it to the full. An excellent record. (8.5/10)

Blue Commotion, de band rond zangeres Zoë Schwarz bestaat sinds 2012 en in hun achtste jaar hebben zij onlangs hun zesde cd, getiteld “Chameleon” uitgebracht. Het viertal is afkomstig uit het mooie graafschap Dorset in het zuidwesten van Engeland. Naast de al genoemde Zoë Schwarz bestaat de band uit gitarist Rob Koral, Hammond-organist Pete Whittaker en drummer Paul Robinson. Daarbij is een blazerssectie toegevoegd, die bestaat uit Ian Ellis (tenorsax) and Patrick Hayes (trombone).

Op de cd treffen we twaalf nummers aan (= 1 hidden bonus track, een mooie verrassing), waarvan er elf zijn geschreven door Rob Koral en Zoë Schwarz en één door Koral met Sue Hawker. Muzikaal gezien is de Zoe Schwarz Blue Commotion niet zomaar een bluesbandje. De door Rob Koral geschreven arrangementen zijn zeer divers en voegen blues en rock samen met jazz, latin, boogie en funk. Wat dat betreft is de albumtitel “Chameleon” prima gekozen: kleurrijk, verrassend. Ik pik er een paar nummers uit. In het eerste nummer, het swingende “Life Goes On”, is de interactie tussen zang en blazers prachtig verwerkt. Het is een nummer dat bij tijd en wijle doet denken aan Steely Dan. Hoofdrollen voor  Hammond en gitaar zijn weggelegd in “Hello Old Friend”. Het nummer wordt gedragen door het orgel en Korals smaakvolle gitaarsolo maakt het helemaal af. Zoë Schwarz is met haar stem leidend op het hele album en vooral in nummers als de ballad “I’ll Be There For You” en de blues “When The Blues Came A Knocking” toont zij haar veelzijdigheid. De verrassing komt op het eind bij het stevige “Come And Lay With Me”, waar na een paar seconden stilte de band overgaat in een jazzy versie van Nina Simone’s “Lover Man”. 

“Chameleon” is een levendig en opwindend album geworden. Volop genieten dus. Een uitstekende plaat.
